January 7, 1610: Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei first sighted Jupiter’s four largest satellite moons, using the telescope he had developed the previous year

January 8, 2004: The Queen Mary 2, at the time the largest and most expensive passenger liner ever built, was officially named ahead of its maiden voyage

January 9, 1324: Venetian explorer Marco Polo died. His epic 24-year travels through the Orient did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China
