December 3, 1923: Maria Callas, renowned operatic soprano famed for her dramatic interpretations and bel canto technique, was born to Greek parents in New York City

December 4, 1443: Pope Julius II, who reigned from 1503-13 and was the patron of Michaelangelo and Raphael, who painted the portrait above, was born as Giuliano della Rovere

December 5, 2013: Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, died at age 95. An anti-apartheid icon, he led the transition from white-minority rule to democracy in 1994

December 6, 2022: The last Boeing 747, the 1,574th in total, rolled off the production line at Boeing’s Everett plant near Seattle. The 747 was the world’s first wide-body airliner

December 7, 1993: U.S. astronauts carried out the first repairs to the Hubble Space Telescope, including installing equipment to counteract a flaw in Hubble’s primary mirror

December 8, 1863: English boxer Tom King defeated American John Heenan to become the world’s first heavyweight champion. The fight lasted 35 minutes and 25 rounds

December 9, 1843: The first commercially available Christmas card was created in England. Two batches totalling 2,050 cards were printed and sold for one shilling each
