Argentina's Peronists soar to seal run-off with far-right Milei
October 23, 2023 - Economy minister Sergio Massa defied expectations to lead Argentina’s presidential election, putting him on course for a run-off contest with far-right candidate Javier Milei.
With near 98% of the vote counted, Massa has 36.7% of the vote, ahead of Milei on just 30%, while conservative Patricia Bullrich is behind on 23.8%, a result that defied pre-election polls that had predicted a libertarian win.
Many pollsters believed voters would punish Massa for presiding over a financial crisis. Inflation is nearing 140%.
Argentines will have to choose between Massa and Milei in a follow-up vote scheduled for November 19.
