Argentina’s candidates prepare for election showdown

By Jordi Bou

October 22, 2023 - As Argentinians prepare to vote, three candidates are vying in a tight race for the presidency, with far-right libertarian Javier Milei slightly ahead in the polls.

Javier Milei, a far-right populist who admires Donald Trump and made a name for himself by shouting against Argentina’s “political caste” on television, is leading the polls ahead of the presidential vote, but it remains a tight race between the top three candidates, three recent surveys show.

An average of three surveys conducted between October 9-11, have Economy Minister Sergio Massa in second place and conservative opposition candidate Patricia Bullrich in third.

One of them will replace President Alberto Fernandez, who is not seeking re-election.

The election comes as Argentine voters have been hard-hit by 124% yearly inflation that has pummeled their purchasing power. Two in five Argentines live in poverty.
