See what’s changed with the new PlayStation 5 “Slim”
October 13, 2023 - Sony has unveiled a redesigned PlayStation 5 console, featuring a smaller size, boosted memory and a detachable disc drive.
Releasing in time for the holidays, Sony is bringing to market a revised slimmer, lighter, and uniquely modular PlayStation 5 games console – unofficially dubbed the PlayStation 5 “Slim”.
In what is the first major update to the current generation console since its launch in November 2020, the new look brings with it a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive.
The main purpose of the modular design is to allow customers to be able to buy the cheaper Digital Edition of the console for $450 and then if they wish at a later date purchase the disc drive add-on ($80) to make it identical to its pricier sibling ($500), which sports a disc drive out of the box.
Other benefits of the revamp include a larger 1TB SSD drive, a 30% smaller profile and around a 20% reduction in weight.
Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.
The PlayStation 5 “Slim” goes on sale in November 2023.
