Typhoon Koinu forecast to hit Taiwan and Hong Kong

By Ninian Carter

October 3, 2023 - Severe Typhoon Koinu is set to batter Taiwan before bearing down on Hong Kong, which is still recovering after Super Typhoon Saola struck the city in September.

Severe Typhoon Koinu is set to batter Taiwan on Thursday before approaching Hong Kong – still recovering from Super Typhon Saola, which struck the city last month.

According to forecasts from the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Koinu will have a maximum windspeed of 195km/h, dropping to 140km/h as it makes landfall in southern Taiwan.

Taiwan, the Philippines and Hong Kong issued warnings on Tuesday, citing rough seas and potential floods and landslides.

The last time Hong Kong had to raise its maximum hurricane warning twice in the same year was in 1964 – almost 60 years ago.
