U.S. to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles

By Jordi Bou

September 26, 2023 - President Joe Biden has decided to supply Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles, giving Kyiv the ability to inflict damage deeper within Russian-occupied territory.

After nearly a year of rebuffing Kyiv’s pleas, the Biden administration intends to provide a version of the missile armed with cluster munitions rather than a single warhead, according to people familiar with the matter.

The cluster-armed ATACMS, with a range of up to 300km, could allow Ukraine to strike command posts, ammunition stores and logistics routes far behind Russian front lines and dug-in defences.

ATACMS are fired from the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), which has been efficiently used by Ukraine since last summer.

Theoretically, ATACMS could also allow Ukrainian forces to strike further targets on Russian soil, but Kyiv has pledged to use ATACMS only within Ukraine’s borders.
