Nintendo Switch 2 tipped to launch in 2024
September 22, 2023 - Rumours of an announcement on Nintendo’s Switch 2 console are gathering pace, with reports of demos being shown to select developers behind closed doors.
Rumours of a Nintendo Switch 2 announcement are gathering pace, with reports of demos of the console being shown to developers behind closed doors at Gamescom last month, and recent court documents in the FTC vs Microsoft case alluding to Activision being briefed on a next-generation Nintendo Switch last year.
Eurogamer reports that during August’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, trusted developers were shown demos of how games run on the unannounced system, including an improved version of “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and Epic Games’ “The Matrix Awakens” Unreal Engine 5 tech demo.
According to internal emails between Activision executives, the Switch NG (next generation) will be akin to the Playstation 4 and XBox One in terms of power – making it able to use ray tracing (an advanced and lifelike way of rendering light and shadows in a scene).
If true, ports of AAA titles such as the “Call of Duty” series, would be able to run on the Switch 2, with comparable performane to Generation 8 consoles like the PS4.
When looking at the unit sales pattern of the Switch and previous Nintendo consoles, we can see that a new console is indeed due soon if Nintendo wants to keep to its tried and tested release formula.
The Switch launched in 2017, and will be seven years old by the time a Switch 2 likely comes to market in 2024, which is on par with the general lifespan of a modern games console.
