Morocco earthquake kills hundreds

By Jordi Bou

September 9, 2023 - A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing over a thousand people and destroying buildings in the deadliest tremor to hit the country in decades.

The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

In Marrakech, some buildings in the old city, a Unesco World Heritage site, have been damaged or destroyed.

Several world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, offered assistance to Morocco.
