RESCUE

Huge rescue mission for man deep in Turkey cave

By Jordi Bou

September 8, 2023 - Rescuers from across Europe are racing to save an American cave explorer trapped in Turkey’s third deepest cave complex.

Around 170 doctors, paramedics and experienced cavers from several countries – including Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Turkey – are working to rescue Mark Dickey, 40, who became trapped in the Morca Cave on Sep 2.

Yusuf Ogrenecek, of the Turkish caving federation, said one of the most difficult tasks of cave rescue operations was widening narrow passages to allow stretcher lines to pass through at low depths.

The operation is expected to take several days.

Cave rescues at depths of more than 1,000m are relatively uncommon.

In 2014 a man was evacuated from a depth of 1,148m at the Riesending cave in Bavaria, Germany. Some 728 people were involved in the operation, which took 11 days.
