Biden supports extension of aid for nuclear test victims

August 10, 2023 - President Joe Biden has expressed support for extending federal assistance to people affected by radiation from nuclear weapons testing such as the 1945 Trinity test.

“I’m prepared to help in terms of making sure that those folks are taken care of, by the way,” Biden said during a speech Wednesday in New Mexico, about 110km from the Trinity test site.

The state’s place in U.S. history as a testing ground has received more attention recently with the release of “Oppenheimer,” a movie about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the top-secret Manhattan Project.

Last month, the U.S. Senate voted to expand compensation. The provisions would extend health care coverage and compensation to so-called downwinders exposed to radiation during weapons testing to several new regions stretching from New Mexico to Guam, AP said.
