Threads lost half of its active users in a week

By Ninian Carter

July 19, 2023 - After a spectacular start Threads has reportedly lost half of its active users in a week, with early reviews calling the app “boring”.

Early reviews of Meta’s new Threads social media app are not positive, with it being called “boring” due to its strong content moderation, which bans trolling and political discourse.

Many of Threads’ 100 million sign-ups are not posting much content either.

A study from data-tracking site SimilarWeb finds that the number of daily active users dropped from more than 49 million on July 7, to 23.6 million a week later.

However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems unconcerned, saying the number of users is “way ahead of what we expected” and “we’ve run this playbook many times (FB, IG, Stories, Reels, etc) and I’m confident Threads is on a good path too”.

SimilarWeb notes that Twitter user retention has also declined, with the number of new users who continue to use it regularly falling from 19% in May 2022 to 16% in May of this year.
