August 13, 1923: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was re-elected Speaker of the Grand Assembly, a position equal to the presidency. He was formally elected president later that year

August 14, 1457: The Mainz Psalter was published. It contained the psalms and was the second major book printed with movable metal type, after the Gutenberg Bible

August 15, 1843: The Tivoli Pleasure Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. It inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland

August 16, 1958: Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan. She is the world’s best-selling female recording artist, with global sales of more than 300 million

August 19, 2003: Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN special representative in Iraq, was killed when a huge suicide truck bomb ripped through the UN headquarters in Baghdad
