Vladimir Putin vows to crush uprising

By Jordi Bou

June 24, 2023 - President Vladimir Putin has vowed to crush an armed mutiny after Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin seized control of military sites in an attempt to oust Russia’s military leadership.

Yevgeny Prigozhin accuses Russia’s military leadership of killing large number of his fighters in an air strike in Ukraine. He has threatened to march on Moscow unless he meets Russia's defence minister.

Wagner fighters are in control of Rostov-on-Don, a city of more than a million people close to the border with Ukraine, and are rapidly advancing northwards through western Russia.

Reports say that Wagner mercenaries have seized military facilities in Voronezh, which is halfway between Rostov and Moscow.
