July 23, 1903: The first Ford Model A was sold. Designed and manufactured by then little-known engineer Henry Ford, it featured a twin-cylinder internal combustion engine

July 24, 1938: Nescafé instant coffee was introduced in Switzerland by the Nestlé company, to assist the Brazilian government to solve its coffee surplus problem

July 25, 1948: Bread rationing in Britain came to an end. It was imposed in July 1946 as a result of shortages after World War II, though it was not rationed during the war itself

July 26, 1943: Mick Jagger, a founder member of rock band the Rolling Stones, was born. Known for his energetic live performances and distinctive voice, he turns 80 today

July 27, 1953: The armistice ending the three-year Korean War was signed at Panmunjom. The conflict claimed the lives of at least 2.5 million soldiers and civilians

July 28, 1858: The first use of fingerprints as a means of identification was made by William Herschel in India. He asked a businessman to impress his hand print on a contract

July 29, 1958: President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating NASA, to equip the U.S. “for leadership in the Space Age”
