Russian invasion: Situation report day 471

By Phil Bainbridge

June 9, 2023 - Kyiv has dismissed reports that its long-awaited counter-offensive appears to have begun, with heavy fighting on at least three fronts.

Ukrainian forces have made gains of up to 2km on the flanks of Bakhmut and intense fighting is taking place in western Donetsk, but after earlier advances in western Zaporizhya Oblast, Russian defences have regained lost ground and are defending their positions. Ukrainian efforts appear to be particularly focussed on the key logistics hub of Tokmak in that region.

In Kherson Oblast, around 600 square km is under water following the destruction of Kakhovka dam, 68% of it in Russian-occupied territory and over 500,000 hectares of farmland could be lost. The cooling pond at Zaporizhya nuclear plant is reportedly in danger of collapse.
