Post-pandemic air fares reach sky-high levels

By Ninian Carter

June 5, 2023 - Air travel is now much more expensive than before the pandemic, according to corporate travel analysis of thousands of flights to and from Asia.

Major airlines are enjoying the quick recovery from economic damage suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent travel lockdowns.

According to corporate travel company American Express Global Business Travel, which analysed thousands of client flights to and from Asian destinations, flying will be more expensive this summer.

A typical New York to Shanghai flight in economy class is 128% more expensive than it was in 2019. Likewise, flying economy from Paris to Tokyo will set you back 69% more than it did just four years ago.

Supply shortfalls that boost fares, caused by a range of factors including inflation, rising fuel costs and capacity issues going into the peak travel season, are seeing eager customers often upgrade themselves to more expensive seats.

Air carriers such as British Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Qantas are all expected to raise their financial outlooks for the year ahead.
