Dozens of NATO soldiers hurt in Kosovo in clash with Serbs

By Jordi Bou

May 30, 2023 - Dozens of NATO troops secured a municipal building in the Kosovo town of Zvecan, a day after 30 NATO soldiers and 52 Serb protesters were injured, Reuters reports.

On Monday, 19 Hungarian and 11 Italian peacekeepers were hurt as they tried to deter protesters from invading government building in Zvecan. Security cordons around two other town halls were also set up by NATO soldiers.

Unrest in the region has intensified since ethnic Albanian mayors took office in northern Kosovo’s Serb-majority area after April elections the Serbs boycotted, a move that led the U.S. and its allies to rebuke Pristina on Friday.

Serbia’s president Aleksandar Vucic put the army on the highest level of combat alert in response to the fresh protests. He moved army units close to Kosovo’s border on Friday, following similar clashes.
