Nine dead in northern Italy floods

By Jordi Bou

May 18, 2023 - At least nine people have died and several are missing after heavy rains battered Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, triggering floods and landslides.

About 14,000 people have been evacuated, and some had to be rescued from roofs by helicopter.

The authorities say dozens of rivers have broken their banks, flooding 37 towns. The mayor of Ravenna says his city is now “unrecognisable”.

Around 120 landslides have been registered.

Sunday's Formula One Grand Prix in Imola, which is close to many of the worst-hit areas, has been called off.

Weather-related disasters have been on the rise in Italy, a country deemed particularly vulnerable to climate change. Emilia-Romagna and parts of Marche were also affected by severe flooding in early May in which two people died.
