G7 leaders gather in Hiroshima

By Jordi Bou

May 19, 2023 - May 21, 2023 - Leaders of seven of the world’s richest nations meet in the Japanese city of Hiroshima as the war in Ukraine drags on and tensions rise between the U.S. and China.

The leaders of the G7 nations – U.S., Japan, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Italy and the European Union – will try to form a unified front against Chinese threats to Taiwan and Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The summit will include eight other guest nations, part of a complicated, high-stakes diplomatic gambit meant to settle the world’s most serious crises.

Regional powerhouses India and Brazil will attend along with ASEAN host Indonesia, Pacific Island Forum chair the Cook Islands, African Union chair Comoros, Vietnam, South Korea and Australia.

They will take part in a dedicated outreach session as well as bilateral meetings intended to bring some reluctant leaders into the fold in opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine and Beijing's growing military assertiveness.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected to attend.

Japanese Prime Minister's Fumio Kishida’s symbolic choice of Hiroshima, his hometown, as host location highlights his desire to put nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation at the top of this year's agenda.
