Russian invasion: Situation report day 443
May 12, 2023 -
Reports of Ukrainian forces breaking through Russian lines at Bakhmut,
with up to 3km of territory recaptured, have been denied by the Kremlin.
A Ukrainian brigade commander has said the Intensity of Russian artillery attacks is in fact increasing, despite repeated claims of munition shortages by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. Russia would need to produce over 29 million shells per year to meet Prigozhin’s demands of 80,000 shells per day, 13 times more than Russia’s pre-invasion output.
Moscow has denied Ukrainian and U.S. claims that a Patriot missile defence system shot down one if its state-of-the-art Kinzhal hypersonic missiles on May 4. Previously, Ukrainian air defences had been unable to prevent Kinzhal attacks.
The UK has confirmed reports that it will be donating long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine.
