Russia orders evacuations from southern Ukraine

May 9, 2023 - Occupying authorities are ordering people living in Russian-occupied areas of southern Ukraine to evacuate in the face of a looming Ukrainian counteroffensive.

On Friday, Russia told people to leave 18 settlements in the Zaporizhya region, citing intensified fighting.

The town of Enerhodar, close to the contested Zaporizhya nuclear power plant, was among the settlements to be evacuated.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog has raised concerns as to the safety of the plant, describing the situation as “increasingly unpredictable”.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said the evacuation of residents near the nuclear facility indicated the possibility of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces around the plant, according to the BBC.
