Media freedom in dire state around the world

By Jordi Bou

May 3, 2023 - Press freedom is in a dire state in record numbers of countries, with autocratic governments, disinformation, propaganda and artificial intelligence posing a growing threat to journalism.

The World Press Freedom Index revealed a shocking slide, with an unprecedented 31 countries deemed to be in a “very serious situation”, the lowest ranking in the report by global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF), up from 21 just two years ago.

May 3 marks the 30th anniversary of the first World Press Freedom Day, which was created to remind governments of their duty to uphold freedom of expression.
