Finland’s Sanna Marin defeated in tight election race

By Ninian Carter

April 3, 2023 - Prime Minister Sanna Marin was ousted in a tightly fought election by Petteri Orpo’s centre-right National Coalition Party.

National Coalition Party leader Petteri Orpo has won a tense three-way election race, defeating Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democrat Party.

Orpo, 53, secured 20.8% of the vote ahead of the right-wing populist Finns Party on 20.1% and the centre left, led by Marin, 37, with 19.9% of the vote.

This is a bitter defeat for Marin, who had been widely praised for steering Finland towards imminent NATO membership and for her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Orpo now has the daunting task of forming a coalition as no one party is anywhere near a majority in the 200-seat parliament.
