Russian invasion: Situation report day 401
March 31, 2023 - Russia takes over the monthly presidency of the UN Security Council, with permanent members U.S., UK and France likely to downgrade their representation.
Ukraine has called it “the worst joke ever for April Fool’s Day” on the one year anniversary of the discovery of a massacre of civilians by Russian soldiers in Bucha, with Moscow still pursuing a war of aggression and its leader, President Vladimir Putin, facing arrest for war crimes. Permanent members the U.S., UK and France are not expected to boycott the meetings but may downgrade their representation.
Turkey’s parliament has approved a bill clearing the way for Finland to join NATO. As one of Russia’s war objectives was to prevent an expansion of NATO up to its borders in Ukraine, it appears to have backfired spectacularly, with the Russian-NATO border now extended by approximately 1,300km.
