Taiwan under renewed pressure not to engage with U.S.

By Ninian Carter

April 6, 2023 - Taiwan, under pressure from China not to engage with the rest of the world, has formal diplomatic relations with only 13 countries since Honduras severed ties in favour of China.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has met with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California, enraging China’s authorities who have responded by sending warships into the waters around the self-governed island.

China is openly engaged in trying to prevent Taiwan from having diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.

On March 26, 2023, Taiwan was dealt a blow when Honduras ended official diplomatic relations with the island, saying it now only recognised China.

This leaves Taiwan with formal diplomatic relations with only 13 countries:

Belize
Eswatini
Guatemala
Haiti
Marshall Islands
Nauru
Palau
Paraguay
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Tuvalu
Vatican City

China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has repeatedly warned U.S. officials not to meet Tsai, vowing retaliation if they do.
