MLB introduces new balanced schedule

By Chris Dinsdale

March 30, 2023 - The Opening Day of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season -- the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. The MLB is adopting a radical new schedule in a bid to balance the relative strengths of each division.

A total of 30 teams play in the National League (NL) and American League (AL) -- 15 in each. The new format retains the 162-game regular season, with allocation of divisional, intraleague and interleague matches changed -- each team will now face all other 29 opponents at least once. The season culminates in the World Series, a best-of-seven championship series between the top two teams which takes place in October.

The Houston Astros are the reigning World Series champions, winning their second World Series title with a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
