IMMIGRATION

Record migration raises Canada’s population

By Ninian Carter

March 23, 2023 - The population of Canada increased by more than one million people in 2022, mostly due to efforts to recruit migrants to the country.

Canada’s population grew by 1,040,110 people from Q1 2022 to Q1 2023, according to Statistics Canada – the first time annual growth has surpassed one million people.

The increase from 38,516,138 to 39,566,248 people is in part due to government efforts to encourage migrants to the country to ease labour shortages and support an ageing population.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been attracting more immigrants to Canada since gaining power in 2015, with international migration now accounting for 96% of the country’s population growth – making it the fastest-growing G7 country.
