April 16, 1947: The phrase “Cold War” was coined to describe the rapidly deteriorating relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, former allies in WWII

April 17, 1970: The crippled U.S. spacecraft Apollo 13 and its three astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific after its near-disastrous trip to the moon

April 18, 1923: The original Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees baseball team, opened. Pictured above is the last game before the old stadium was demolished

April 19, 1943: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began when the last 60,000 Polish Jews confined there resisted Nazi efforts to transport them to extermination camps

April 20, 1893: Surrealist painter Joan Miro was born in Barcelona. Influenced by primitive Catalan art, Gaudi and Picasso, his paintings eventually became entirely abstract

April 21, 1967: A coup by right-wing army officers in Greece established the regime of the “Colonels”. The monarchy was ousted and the military junta lasted until 1974

April 22, 1500: Navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral landed in Brazil and claimed it for Portugal under the terms of a treaty that divided the New World between Portugal and Spain
