The deadly return of Tropical Storm Freddy

By Ninian Carter

March 14, 2023 - Tropical Storm Freddy, the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record, has struck southern Africa for the second time in a month, claiming over 200 lives.

Mozambique and Malawi are the latest casualties of Tropical Storm Freddy, which has made landfall for a second time in southern Africa.

More than 200 people were killed, and many more injured, in the latest strike, which ripped roofs off buildings, brought widespread flooding and triggered landslides.

Freddy is one of the fiercest storms recorded in the southern hemisphere and may be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone in history.

Scientists believe climate change is making tropical storms stronger, as warmer oceans evaporate more heat energy into the atmosphere.
