Thousands left without shelter after refugee camp blaze

By Ninian Carter

March 6, 2023 - Bangladeshi officials are investigating the cause of a raging inferno at a Rohingya refugee camp which destroyed 2,000 shelters and left 12,000 people homeless.

A blaze at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh has destroyed 2,000 bamboo-and-tarpaulin shelters, leaving 12,000 people displaced. There are no reported deaths.

The blaze began at Camp 11 in Cox’s Bazar, a southeastern coastal district where more than a million Rohingya refugees live, spreading quickly through gas cylinders in kitchens.

Most of the residents, who predominantly follow Islam, fled a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar in 2017 after Rohingya insurgents launched attacks against police. Conditions there have only worsened since a military takeover in 2021.

Local media reports one man has been arrested in connection with a police investigation treating the fire as an act of sabotage.
