Champagne celebrates record sales

By Duncan Mil

January 19, 2023 - Champagne sales boomed over the past year to €6 billion and are well ahead of pre-pandemic levels. Exports continued to rise, accounting for 57.5% of sales, up from 42% in 2010.

Comité Champagne said the increase in revenue -- up from €5.5 billion in 2021 -- was thanks to the waning Covid pandemic and having moved further up-market with pricier vintage Champagnes.

“It naturally accompanied consumers throughout the world as they rejoiced at the end of lockdowns and found the taste again for celebrating, going out, travelling,” said David Chatillon, co-president of the Comité Champagne.

Sales had fallen to 245 million bottles in 2020 at the height of the pandemic lockdowns.

Exports continued to rise, climbing 4.3% by volume to 187.5 million bottles. The loss of exports to Russia had little impact as the market represented under two million bottles per year.

The United States and the UK are leading the way in importing champagne, with 34.1 and 29.9 million bottles, respectively, with a combined value of €1.3 billion.
