Australian Open women’s preview 2023

By Chris Dinsdale

January 16, 2023 - January 29, 2023 - The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, takes place in Melbourne. Iga Swiatek begins the season tipped to continue her dominance, but faces tough competition from a women’s field aiming to claim their maiden Grand Slam title.

Swiatek is hoping to emulate her stellar 2022 season, where she catapulted to World No.1 -- following the retirement of Ashleigh Barty -- claimed two major titles at Roland Garros and U.S. Open, and enjoyed a superb 37-match winning streak.

Swiatek will face opposition for the title from rivals including tenacious threat Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, who recent led team USA to glory at the inaugural United Cup, and the increasingly assured Aryna Sabalenka, who started 2023 with the Adelaide International title.
