December 20, 2022 - Weeks after China abandoned its strict Covid Zero regime, doubts are growing about the reliability of its official Covid figures, raising fears that new variants could emerge unchecked.

Amid widespread reports of hospitals overwhelmed by new cases and rushing to install new beds, crematoriums handling a growing number of bodies and pharmacies running out of medicines, unofficial estimates based on social media posts suggest that officials are hiding the true extent of the surge of the virus.
