December 9, 2022 - Croatia has been admitted into the EU’s Schengen border-free travel zone, but Bulgaria and Romania were rejected after opposition from the Netherlands and Austria who accused them of being soft on illegal migration.

Politicians in Bulgaria and Romania have argued that the influx of migrants into Austria is primarily via the west Balkan route, including Hungary and Croatia, where numbers have practically doubled each year for the past three years, reaching 128,000 this year.
