Avatar 2 hits $2 billion box office target
December 16, 2022 - It’s taken 13 years for a sequel to James Cameron’s “Avatar” to arrive, thanks in part to needing to invent new technology to realise it.
The movie “Avatar” captured the imaginations of cinema goers over a decade ago – becoming the most successful movie in history, with a global box office haul of almost $3 billion.
Now, following a long period of screenwriting and technological innovation, its sequel is here – “Avatar: The Way of Water”.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first movie, the story follows the Sully family, the trouble that follows them and the lengths they will go to to keep each other safe.
The Way of Water was originally intended for release in 2014, but the addition of three more sequels (for a total of five Avatar movies) and the need to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, led to significant delays.
Along with delays came a ballooning budget, now believed to be in the region of $350m-$400m – making it one of the top ten most expensive movies ever made.
Avatar: The Way of Water opens in cinemas on Dec 16, 2022. Further sequels will arrive in December 2024, 2026 and 2028. Although, James Cameron points out that the final two movies will only be made if Avatar 2 is successful (Avatar 3 has already been filmed and is in post-production).
