Peru plunges into political crisis as president ousted

By Jordi Bou

December 8, 2022 - Peru swore in a new president a day after leftist leader Pedro Castillo was arrested after trying to shut down congress before a vote on his impeachment.

Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as president through 2026, making her the first woman to lead Peru. She called for a political truce after months of instability, including two prior impeachment attempts, and said a new cabinet inclusive of all political stripes would be formed.

Peru, once one of Latin America’s most robust economies, has been going through a rocky political period, with multiple presidents ousted from office over the past three decades.
