Police patrols, cameras deter fresh China protests
November 29, 2022 - A heavy police presence has been reported in several cities in China, as authorities clamp down following protests against Covid restrictions which erupted over the weekend.
Some gatherings were quelled or failed to materialise. Reports have emerged of people being questioned and their phones searched, according to the BBC.
In Beijing, several protests were planned for Monday but did not take place, as police patrols and a network of surveillance cameras appeared to deter fresh gatherings, AFP said.
China has the world’s biggest CCTV monitoring network, deploying more than half of all surveillance cameras in use globally, according to security research firm, Comparitech.
