Malaysia’s king to resolve post-election impasse
November 22, 2022 - Malaysia's King Al-Sultan Abdullah said on Tuesday he will choose the country’s next prime minister, after the leading two contenders failed to win a majority in parliament.
Saturday’s election resulted in an unprecedented hung parliament, with neither opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim nor former premier Muhyiddin Yassin winning the simple majority needed to form a government, according to Reuters.
Malaysia’s king plays a largely ceremonial role but the constitution does give him the power to appoint a prime minister that he believes can command a majority among lawmakers, Reuters said.
