Famous people who died in 2022
December 31, 2022 - A small selection of famous figures who died in 2022 include Queen Elizabeth II, former world leaders Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet president, Shinzo Abe of Japan and Jiang Zemin of China, plus Madeleine Albright, the first female U.S. secretary of state. The arts world lost film director Jean-Luc Godard, actors Sidney Poitier, Angela Lansbury and Nichelle Nicholls, singers Olivia Newton-John and Jerry Lee Lewis, while sports fans mourned the loss of Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne.
Among stars of stage and screen who bid farewell were William Hurt, James Caan, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Monica Vitti, Robbie Coltrane and Kirstie Alley.
The music world lost larger-than-life singer Meat Loaf, singer-songwriters Loretta Lynn and Christine McVie, and Irene Cara, who immortalised the song Fame.
Other notable figures include conservationist and fossil hunter Richard Leakey, author Hilary Mantel, fashion designers Issey Miyake and Thierry Mugler, and charismatic tennis coach Nick Bollettieri.
