At least 140 people killed in India bridge collapse

October 31, 2022 - At least 141 people were killed in western India’s Gujarat state on Sunday when a pedestrian bridge in the town of Morbi collapsed, plunging them into the waters below.

The 230m Julto Pul (or the Hanging Bridge) on the Machchhu river was built in 1880, during British rule in India. The popular tourist attraction reopened a week ago after repairs, according to the BBC.

Officials have not yet said how many people were on the bridge when tragedy struck at around 18:40 (13:10 GMT) on Sunday, but estimates put it between 400 and 500.

More than 177 people have been rescued, officials said.
