November 13, 1947: Soviet military engineer Mikhail Kalashnikov completed the development of the AK-47, the world’s most commonly used assault rifle

November 14, 1922: The BBC made its first daily radio broadcast. News bulletins, music, drama and “talks” initially filled the airwaves for only a few hours a day

November 15, 2012: Xi Jinping was named as successor to Hu Jintao as China’s ruling Politburo held its 10-yearly leadership change. Xi became president in March 2013

November 16, 1988: Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party won the country’s general election, making her the first woman leader of an Islamic country in modern times

November 17, 1942: Film director Martin Scorsese was born. He won his first Best Director Academy Award in 2006 for The Departed, after five previous nominations

November 18, 1963: The first push-button telephone went into service, eventually replacing the rotary dial phone. The first, 10-button dial soon gave way to the 12-button version

November 19, 1999: China launched its first, unmanned Shenzhou spacecraft. It landed safely after 21 hours in orbit and was recovered from the desert in Inner Mongolia
