September boost to Europe’s car sales

By Duncan Mil

October 19, 2022 - Automakers in the EU, European Free Trade Area and the UK delivered a combined 1.05 million passenger cars last month, building on results from August, the first gains in more than a year.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) announced new car registration data for the EU and EFTA countries -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland -- rose to 824,657 vehicles in September. The UK added another 225,269 vehicles, bringing the total to 1,049,926, up 7.9% from a year ago.

Automobile sales among EU countries increased by 14.1% in Germany, 12.7% in Spain, 5.5% in France and 5.4% in Italy in September compared to the same period of the previous year.

Among the 27 EU member states, Germany had the highest number of new cars last month, with 224,816, up 14.1 per cent from September 2021. France followed with 141,137, while Italy had 110,976 and Spain with 67,240 registrations.

Even as deliveries rise, sales remain far below 2019 levels, the year before the pandemic, as carmakers continue to battle issues from chip shortages to the energy crisis.

However, while supply-chain problems are easing, runaway inflation and a worsening economic outlook are threatening to derail a recovery.
