Contenders for China’s new team

By Duncan Mil

October 23, 2022 - Just seven men vying for membership of the Chinese Communist Party’s all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee will lead the world’s second-largest economy.

On Sunday (October 23), a day after China’s Communist Party congress concludes, the newly elected 200-member Central Committee will convene behind closed doors at its first plenum.

Two lists will have been compiled in secrecy, selecting members of the next Politburo, usually 25 people, and its Standing Committee, which currently numbers seven.

President Xi Jinping will lead the new Standing Committee in order of seniority along the red carpet and into a room at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Xi will then introduce his new team that will govern China’s 1.45 billion people for the next five years and speak about his goals and ambitions, economic, military and foreign policy.
