UKRAINE

Situation report day 218

By Jordi Bou

September 29, 2022 - The U.S. said it will provide an additional $1.1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, including funding for about 18 HIMARS, as Ukrainian forces in the east made further gains and were reported to surround the key town of Lyman completely.

The weapons package for Ukraine includes 18 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, accompanying munitions, various types of counter drone systems and radar systems. The announcement brings the U.S. security aid to $16.2 billion, Reuters reported.

Menawhile, Russia was poised to annex a swath of Ukraine within days, releasing what it called vote tallies showing overwhelming support in four provinces to join it, after what Ukraine and the West denounced as illegal sham referendums held at gunpoint.

The head of the upper house of the Russian parliament said it could consider the incorporation of the four partially occupied regions on Oct. 4, three days before President Vladimir Putin's 70th birthday.
