Roger Federer to retire after this month’s Laver Cup

By Chris Dinsdale

September 25, 2022 - Tennis legend Roger Federer is to retire from the professional tour, aged 41, marking the end of a superlative career that heralded a golden era in men’s tennis.

One of the world’s greatest and most popular tennis players, Roger Federer is set to retire from top-level tennis after the Laver Cup indoor hardcourt tournament in London, which runs from September 23-25.

The Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion has not played competitively for 14 months, when he appeared at Wimbledon 2021 – being knocked out in the quarter-finals by the then 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.

Federer has been struggling with knee problems for several years, undergoing three operations that have restricted his playability to only three Grand Slams since the start of 2020.
