UKRAINE
Situation report day 205
September 16, 2022 - Ukrainian authorities found a mass grave containing 440 bodies in the northeastern town of Izyum that was recaptured from Russian forces recently, officials said, including some people killed by shelling and air strikes, Reuters reports.
Thousands of Russian troops fled Izyum last weekend after occupying the city and using it as a logistics hub in the Kharkiv region. They left behind large amounts of ammunition and equipment.
Regional police head Volodymyr Tymoshko said exhumations would begin on Friday to get a clearer picture of the number of victims in the city, which was under Russian occupation for more than five months.
And in his address late on Thursday, President Zelenskiy said more “clear, verified information” would be presented on Friday to Ukrainian and foreign journalists.
