Alcaraz ascends to the pinnacle of tennis

By Chris Dinsdale

September 12, 2022 - Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest World No.1 in the 49-year history of the ATP rankings, after beating Casper Ruud in the U.S. Open final to claim his first Grand Slam title, at Flushing Meadows.

The 19-year-old is the youngest men's Grand Slam champion since Rafael Nadal conquered Roland Garros for the first time in 2005.

Alcaraz is the 28th player to reach World No.1, and is the sixth active player to climb to the top spot -- joining Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray and Daniil Medvedev, whom he replaced at the pinnacle.

Alcaraz (19) and Ruud (23) are the second-youngest Top 2 in the history of the ATP Rankings, only trailing Jimmy Connors (22) and Bjorn Borg (18) in 1975.

This is the first year since 2003 there have been two new World No.1 players in the same season (Medvedev and Alcaraz).
