Swedish PM resigns as right-wing parties win vote

By Duncan Mil

September 15, 2022 - Sweden’s right-wing opposition bloc, comprised of the Sweden Democrats, Moderate Party, Christian Democrats and Liberals, have won a three-seat wafer-thin majority of 176 to 173 seats in the Riksdag.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson resigned Wednesday night (September 14, 2022).

Gangs, immigration and integration issues, and soaring electricity prices dominated the close-fought election campaign.

However, the Sweden Democrat party’s leader Jimmie Akesson will not become prime minister because he does not have the full support of all four parties. Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson will now form a government.
