Situation report day 197

By Jordi Bou

September 8, 2022 - Ukraine forces have advanced at least 20km into Russian-controlled territory in the north-east Kharkiv region, and have recaptured 400 sq km as part of a surprise counteroffensive, U.S. intelligence says.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive is stretching Russian forces who are also facing Ukrainian attacks in the south.

Ukraine’s top military chief has also warned of the threat of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, which would create the risk of a “limited” nuclear conflict with other powers.

The war in Ukraine that began with Russia's invasion on Feb 24 is likely to rage on into next year, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi has said in an article co-authored by lawmaker Mykhailo Zabrodskyi and published by state news agency Ukrinform.
